All the old women are fairies in disguise (as old women) the first fairy (old woman) asks for help crossing the path, so you help. The second woman asks for a drink of water so you give her your last canteen. And the third asks for your shoes you give them to her (and they fit!). When the last old woman is gone they all appear and one at a time say what you did for them and that they will grant you one wish. (I read too many fairy tales :)
